An Email to My Sister
By Sarah Gilmore de Ruiter
December 3, 2010
I had a dream last night, and you were in it.
We were in Malaysia.
staying at some fancy high rise hotel.
The balcony was scary
Because we were up so high
above a busy harbor teeming with junks.
And we had to bunk with other Americans
because it really was a yurt.
And while we were shopping in some district
of Kuala Lumpur, my purse was stolen.
It wa...Expand for more
s the Vera Bradley you gave me for my birthday
or was it graduation?
I told the shop girl.
She knew about Vera.
She was very rude.
About the purseâ¦it was the pink one
with the matching wallet. I wasnât worried about the money.
My Xanax was in it.
And you had to go to the bathroom,
and we were happy because travel makes us sluggish
and shopping, usually in antique malls
With all that dust, and mold,
and the smell of cinnamon from the cans of potpourri
air freshener always in the bathrooms,
seemed to inspire movement in us.
And then I started arguing with another customer.
A beautiful Malaysian.
I accused him of stealing all my money.
He said I was profiling but all
he needed was to use the bathroom too.
And somehow I was engagedâ¦
to the Verizon Salesman who
sold me a new phone on Wednesday.
He was studying to be a doctor.
And he was there with us and wanted me to buy a bikini. But the top was too small so I set my purse down to find a bigger one.
Anyway, Good morning.
How are you?
Have a great day".
